Women’s basketball: Philomath Warriors move past Corbett to claim Class 4A title


The Philomath Warriors lived up to their top seeding in the Class 4A State Tournament.

The Warriors took an early lead against the Corbett Cardinals and never gave up the advantage and won 46-35 to claim the 4A state title at Marshfield High on Saturday night.

Led by senior guard Sage Kramer’s 23 points and 12 rebounds, the Warriors (22-4) were too strong for the Cardinals (23-4). The Warriors outshot the Cardinals 48-31 and they limited Corbett to 19% shooting (11 of 58) from the floor.

Junior post Abigail Brown scored 10 points in the first quarter, helping the Warriors take a 15-6 lead. Kramer scored five points and grabbed three rebounds in the quarter.

The Warriors extended their lead to 20-6 with five minutes remaining in the second quarter before Corbett began to pull away. The Cardinals outscored the Warriors 11-4 to close out the quarter and trailed 24-17 at halftime.

The Warriors led 31-19 going into the third quarter and weren’t threatened by Corbett for the rest of the game.

Brown scored 11 points and had six rebounds and senior guard Regan Larsen had 11 rebounds for the Warriors.

Sophomore Ella Holwege led the Cardinals with 13 points and had five rebounds and four assists. Senior Grace Merrill had seven points and seven rebounds while second Allyson Schimel had six points and five rebounds.
