Wildcats cross past Tawas | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA — The Alpena High men’s basketball team ended the regular season on a high, making quick work of Tawas on Thursday in a 68-43 win.

The Wildcats victory was significant as Alpena was forced to make adjustments to the starting lineup. The Backcourt duo of Tucker Bright and Devin LaMay have been sidelined with injuries and their status for the District Tournament is uncertain.

Sophomore Easton Srebnik entered the starting five for the first time in his career and put on a solid night finishing with 15 points.

“We hope to have good news over the weekend and be healthy. The good thing is we were lucky enough to play without our two starting guards, so we had a game to get a feel for some of the things we can do,” Alpena coach John Pintar said. “I think Easton (Srebnik) did a good job tonight and the game has really slowed down for him since the start of the year and he always brings us good effort from the bench and tonight was as as starter and he did a very good job tonight.

After leading 17-12 after one quarter, Alpena used a strong second quarter at both ends of the field to open a comfortable lead.

The Wildcats had a 36-21 advantage at halftime.

The Wildcats continued to build their lead throughout the third, scoring 13 of the quarter’s final 15 points to take a 54-30 lead.

“I’m confident in the guys we have and we have a strong group of senior players who are looking forward to making their way in the district,” Pintar said.

Cooper Bright led all scorers with a game-high 22 points and drilled six threes in the contest and Mason Mumford added 14 points in the win.

The Wildcats finish the regular season with an 11-8 overall record. Alpena will host Big North Conference rival Gaylord in a first-round district playoff game Monday at 7 p.m.

The Alpena JV team took the victory by defeating Tawas by a final score of 49-10.

Caleb McEwen led the Wildcats with 10 points. Carlos Calzadilla added eight points and Carter Stark, Jake Zann and Avery Samp each finished with six points apiece.
