Quick and easy ways to save on gasoline before vacation travel

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – More than 100 million people will travel between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2 to visit family and loved ones during the holidays, according to AAA. Most will hit the road, and with gas prices a dollar higher than a year ago, local mechanics are helping people find ways to get the most bang for their buck.

Aaron Nelson owns Aaron’s Car Care, Inc. in the Spring Park neighborhood and has seen a lot of them over the years. First off, Nelson said making sure your air filter is clean will make a difference in fuel efficiency.

“You’ll have the cars coming in and it’s going to be full of leaves and all kinds of debris and sand and so on,” Nelson said. “All I do is like trying to jog with a mask on. it does not work well! You are suffocating.

Nelson also said you’ll want to make sure your tire air pressure is up to par.

“If you do that, you’ll find that it’s not just going to help your tires last better,” said Nelson. “It will also increase your fuel consumption. “

According to AAA, the average price of gas in Florida is $ 3,227. In Duval County, the average today stands at $ 3,198. Even though the numbers have come down a bit, saving gas and protecting your car is something you need. Nelson also reminds people that simple changes in your driving habits can also impact your fuel mileage.

Nelson said driving with cruise control on a road trip is very helpful.

“Cruise control is probably one of the most overlooked things on the freeway,” Nelson said. “If you can practice using cruise control, especially on long trips, it’s amazing how much better your fuel mileage is. Because you’re not on the throttle.

Nelson said the way you drive – in the long run – can also help save money.

“No sharp acceleration,” said Nelson. “Coming from a stop, don’t get on the floor and try to catch up with the guy in front of you. Just do reasonable acceleration.

Don’t be a pack rat either. According to Nelson, taking out the things you don’t need to take with you on your road trip can also help you reduce gas mileage.

Nelson also said that if you are heading for a colder climate, once again check your tires to make sure they have enough tread. Also check your antifreeze if you are going north.
