ACME – The Center for Automotive Research’s 2022 Management Information Seminars at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa left the starting gate with some rewards.
The 10th Annual Altair Enlighten Awards were presented during Tuesday morning’s Power Breakfast event in the Tower Ballroom. CAR has full days of events on Tuesday and Wednesday before the three-day event wraps up Thursday with morning roundtables, followed by an afternoon golf outing on the Wolverine course.
The Altair Enlighten Award recognizes “greatest advances in sustainability and lightweighting that have successfully reduced carbon footprint, mitigated water and energy consumption, and leveraged reuse and recycling efforts materials” in the automotive industry, according to a statement. Lightweighting is an automotive industry concept aimed at reducing vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency and handling.
“The caliber of nominees for this year’s Enlighten Award was unparalleled and is a true testament to the investments the automotive industry is making to meet – and even exceed – global sustainability goals,” said Richard Yen, senior vice president, Altair’s product and strategy, “As we celebrate our tenth year and have evaluated hundreds of worthy entries over the years, we’ve seen this award evolve from showcasing lightweighting initiatives to businesses that now fully embrace sustainability and a commitment to creating a net zero environment and the circular economy.”
“The 2022 Enlighten Award winners demonstrate the great strides the automotive industry has made in creating more sustainable products,” CAR President and CEO Carla Bailo said in the release. “Collaborating with Altair over the past ten years has allowed us to showcase the automotive industry’s most unique and proven approaches to achieving weight reduction and sustainability goals on the world stage.”
Winners were named in six different categories:

Finalist: Lacks Enterprises – Composite Wheel Technology
Winner: Nemak – Recycled Materials for Sustainable Manufacturing and Product
Finalist: ArcelorMittal – First large-scale industrial test of direct reduction of iron with hydrogen (H2 DRI test)
Winner: Ford Motor Company – 100% Post-Consumer Recycled Ocean Plastic Wiring Harness Clips
Finalist: Nucor Corporation – Econiq, the world’s first large-scale net zero carbon steel
Winner: Shiloh Industries, General Motors – ShilohCore Acoustic Patch Laminate
Finalist: Bionic Mesh Design GmbH – Bionic Mesh Design
Runner Up: Human Horizons – High Pressure Die-Cast Integrated Aft Cabin
