Elden Ring, Midnight Suns, Halo Infinite, and the best games from Gamescom 2021

The world of Elden Ring has an assortment of monsters to fight.

Bandai Namco Games and Software

Gamescom was completely virtual this year, but that hasn’t stopped the show from showcasing a range of great games that we’ll get our hands on soon (well, some sooner than others). The weeklong event featured several live broadcasts, such as the Xbox Showcase and Geoff Keighley’s Opening night live. There were plenty of games that made a lasting impression, and we’ve rounded up the highlights that stood out from the week, most of which you’ll be able to play this year or early in 2022.

Saints Street

Deep silver

Developer: Volition | Release Date: February 22, 2022

The Saints Row high-octane open-world action series has always been a fitting counterpoint to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series. While both involve mingling with unsavory gangsters and engaging in hostile takeovers to grow your criminal enterprise, Saints Row has done it through the prism of a parody – taking a self-explanatory view. -parodying that the GTA series would not dare.

What other open world crime simulator features insurance fraud-focused mini-games and other goofy but still lucrative schemes to boost your gang’s reputation? The latest entries have introduced Matrix-style action and mayhem, but developer Volition is focusing on a more basic approach to the Saints Row reboot. It’s more about taking over rival territory and bonding with your team of criminals. At least based on the latest trailer, this reboot for Saints Row can be a fun return to form for the franchise.

Developer: Sloclap | Release Date: February 22, 2022

You know those old kung fu movies where the protagonist spends 90 minutes demolishing parts and underling parts in dramatic brawls that gradually spread? Sifu seems to let you be that guy. Developed by the makers of Absolver, a well-received 2017 PC game, Sifu puts you in the shoes of an aging martial artist. That’s not all, every time you die you get older. An elegant trailer shown at Gamescom shows the combat and a range of new locations. Sifu is slated for release on PS4 and PS5 early next year.

Far cry 6

Developer: Ubisoft Toronto | Release Date: October 7, 2021

The next entry in this long series of open-world action takes players back to the tropical settings of previous games. In Far Cry 6, players take on the role of Dani Rojas, a native of Yara Island who joins a revolutionary army to defeat the menacing but charismatic dictator Anton Castillo (played by Breaking Bad and Do the Right Thing actor Giancarlo Esposito) .

The latest trailer focuses heavily on Castillo, showing the performance of the Esposito power plant. We can also learn more about Dani’s story, going up against different lieutenants of the Castillo regime with an assortment of weapons and gadgets. The Far Cry series has a special way of letting players dive into its world and offers the tools to cause as much chaos as possible. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Far Cry 6 certainly hits all the right marks for what this series does best, and we can see a lot more once it releases, later in October. .

wonderful midnight

Infinite halo

343 sectors / Microsoft

Developer: 343 Industries | Release Date: December 8, 2021

It’s been a tough road for the Halo series since 343 Industries took over from Bungie, so the stakes are high for Halo Infinite.

The game has gone through a torturous period of development, but a light is at the end of the tunnel. Gamescom gave us the release date: December 8. She also gave us a cinematic trailer for the free multiplayer half of the game, which everyone thinks is very promising.

There are still no new footage of the single-player campaign, since its much-maligned debut in July 2020. It’s unsettling, but rather we enjoyed the vibe and the return to the basic aesthetic of what it was all about. The team is clearly aiming. I can’t wait for this one.

Dying Light 2

dying light2

Developer: Techland | Release Date: December 8, 2021

Dying Light 2 expands the fast-paced action and smooth gameplay of the original (aka, parkour) into a zombie infested world. New footage from Gamescom focuses on the extended running, jumping and climbing gameplay, with the protagonist avoiding multiple infected and hostile survivors. It reminded us of the thrilling feeling of speed and raw power that the original excelled at. With its release slated for December, you can finally get your hands on the sequel to one of 2015’s surprise hits.

Horizon forbidden to the west

Sony Computer Entertainment of America

Developer: Guerrilla Games | Release date: February 18, 2022

We didn’t really see Horizon Forbidden West at Gamescom, but we did get a release date: February 18, 2022.

That date couldn’t come soon enough. The game’s predecessor, Horizon Zero Dawn, was mega. Taking the best elements from games like The Witcher, Batman Arkham Asylum, and Mass Effect, Horizon Zero Dawn mixed it all up, added robot dinosaurs to the sauce, and made it work in one way or another. Horizon Zero Dawn was as polished and compelling as an open world game can get.

We expect Horizon Forbidden West to raise the bar, both in terms of storytelling and new features. It’s the work of a tight-knit group of creatives at the height of their power.

Forza Horizon 5

Playground games

Developer: Playground Games | Release Date: November 9, 2021

The first eight minutes of Forza Horizon 5 debuted at Gamescom, and the game looks exactly what you expected. And if you’ve played a previous Horizon game, that’s a big compliment.

The franchise is known for its incredible graphics, varied gameplay challenges, and satisfying open-world driving. Forza Horizon 5, from Playground Games, is looking to take that formula and tighten it further with the X | S series enhancements. And best of all? It will be available for Xbox Game Pass from day one.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

Developer: DotEmu / Tribute Games | Release date: TBD 2022

For older Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans, 1991’s Turtles in Time remains the best Turtles video game release. Their next adventure, Shredder’s Revenge, could be a worthy successor. Developed by Dotemu (the studio behind Streets of Rage 4) and Tribute Games, Shredder’s Revenge is a classic side-scrolling beat-’em-up that’s definitely in the vein of Turtles in Time.

Featuring gorgeous pixel art, a four-player couch co-op, and the classic ’80s cartoon cast (including April O’Neil, who appears as a playable character this time around), it’s a mix seductive with nostalgia and modern gaming sensibility.

Ancient ring

Bandai Namco Games

Developer: From the software | Release Date: January 22, 2022

Towards the end of Gamescom week, we got to see a wealth of new information regarding Elden Ring, the next major RPG from the makers of From Software. As the successor to the Dark Souls series, Elden Ring looks more ambitious with each new drop of content. Going deeper into an open-world experience, it brings the familiar Souls-style combat and challenge to a larger scale, and stands as one of our most anticipated games of 2022. But for now, we We’re still waiting to see more gameplay, aside from the two paltry trailers that have been released over the past couple of years.

Call of Duty: The Vanguard

Developer: Sledgehammer Games | Release Date: November 5, 2021

Did you think 2021 would pass without a new Call of Duty game? Think again. At Gamescom, Sledgehammer Games unveiled Call of Duty: Vanguard, a WWII shooter that will firmly establish you in all three major theaters of war: Europe’s Western Front, Eastern Front and Theater of the Pacific.
