Dolby and Dirac Collaborate on Immersive Automotive Audio

NIO ET 7, the first vehicles to integrate Dirac and Dolby Atmos audio optimization algorithms, will enter the European market in 2022.

(Uppsala, Sweden) – Swedish digital audio pioneer Dirac and Dolby, a global leader in immersive entertainment experiences, today announced their collaboration to demonstrate a high-quality, immersive automotive audio experience.

Both Dirac and Dolby have invested decades in developing technologies that deliver the best possible sound experiences in any space, connecting with performers and listeners whether at home or in cars.

With this collaboration, two innovative and highly respected companies in the audio industry are now showing how the combination of their technologies – Dirac’s patented audio optimization algorithms and Dolby Atmos Immersive Audio – enables the ultimate immersive in-vehicle audio experience, which will now be featured in Dolby and Dirac demonstration vehicles around the world.

To date, both companies have tackled the challenges of car audio in different directions. Dirac uses digital signal processing to improve audio system performance and overcome inherent acoustic challenges in cars – such as suboptimal speaker placement and reflective surfaces that blur sound – so the system faithfully reproduces everything content without any unwanted coloration and without requiring any hardware upgrades.

Dolby Atmos has changed the way artists create music. Rather than recording in stereo, with a limit of just two channels, Dolby Atmos allows every sound – every instrument or voice – to be placed anywhere in the three-dimensional space of the recording. Dolby Atmos enables a fantastic immersive listening experience in cars, fully engaging drivers in the music they love.

The combination of complementary Dirac and Dolby technologies creates an immersive in-car music listening experience, setting a new standard in car audio.

Dolby and Dirac will leverage the Dirac car audio solution to optimize audio system performance in Dolby and Dirac’s demo cars, which are used around the world to showcase the immersive power of Dolby Atmos to automakers and consumers in cars.
